What The Press Say!
Restore your faith in a beautiful world
The exquisite 5 star Doxford Cottages, in coastal Northumberland are set in a glorious 2,500 acre private estate; this beautiful holiday accommodation has been restored from 19th century farm buildings and combines luxury and comfort with idyllic peaceful surroundings. Perfect for families; couples; corporate weekends; weary city workers looking for a restorative country break; for wildlife enthusiasts; and for retired people, a holiday at Doxford Cottages is sure to recharge your batteries and provide a welcome respite from the humdrum of everyday life.
At just five minutes from the sandy beaches at Embleton and the majestic castles of the Northumbrian coast, the seven Doxford cottages vary in size, from the romantic Shellrig, which sleeps two, to the lovely Doxford House, the original farmhouse for Doxford Estate home farm, which provides accommodation for eight in four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. All cottages have been carefully and painstakingly restored in keeping with their rural Northumbrian origins, and now provide beautiful, comfortable accommodation of the very highest calibre.
With views over the three acre Doxford Lake, complete with resident swans, each cottage has a south west facing, stone flagged terrace opening on to lawns which lead through a wooded glade, and over the lake to your very own Eden beyond. The lake is reached only through a secure gateway, preventing access by unsupervised children. There are a variety of walks and paths around the lake and estate, signposted for the enjoyment of Doxford Cottages guests. For those who simply wish to appreciate the landscape, there are seats carefully placed at scenic points along the way.
In addition to the extraordinary tranquillity and beauty of this magical place, there's another touch of genius. Doxford Estate is a haven for many of our much loved and endangered species of British wildlife. Doxford resident and wildlife expert John Pringle, who's steeped in the lore of the local landscape, is on hand to offer advice to guests and chances are you will see varieties of animals and birds seldom spotted in other parts of the country. Red squirrels feast on nuts in the woodland at dusk, while young otters fish and splash in the streams at dawn. John has even installed webcams to transmit these "here and now" wildlife images to screens in the cottages. If you wish, he'll also
take you on unique Doxford dawn chorus walks where you can hear birdsong from the first robin to the last warbler. He will show you the most likely places to spot seasonal rarities, which have in the past included kingfishers, ospreys, goldeneyes, bramblings in winter, chiffchaffs in summer, and even the occasional hoopoe or green woodpecker. You'll also see many different varieties of trees, plants and wild flowers during your stay here.
Inside your accommodation, no expense has been spared in ensuring that however you choose to spend your time, everything you could possibly wish for is at hand, from the well equipped games room including pool and table tennis; to the gorgeous, homely kitchens; comfortable, elegant sitting rooms; hundreds of quality hardback books; office facilities; and wi-fi internet access. Local chefs are available to offer dinner parties every night of the week if requested and everything is geared for your comfort and enjoyment.
Put simply, a holiday at Doxford Cottages will restore your faith in a very beautiful world.
